About Kareena Kareena is a skilled teacher located in West Wendover, NV. She comes from a musical family. She completed Alfred books and began accompanying choir at age 12. She has won multiple summer camp music scholarships in MTNA competitions. In addition to piano, she also plays flute, violin, organ, and guitar.
Method Books She prefers Piano Adventure books, but has also taught Alfred and Bastian, while supplementing with Supersonics, Piano Pronto, Piano Safari, Martha Mier, and Melody Bober.
For the older beginners she teaches Hal Leonard's Adult Method Books, Accelerated Piano Adventures, Adult Piano Adventures, or Piano Pronto Methods. If students prefer a specific program, Kareena can work with what meets needs and supplements as she sees gaps in the curriculum.
Philosophy My main musical philosophy focuses on students learning to read music! My goal is for students to learn the skills that will help them to eventually sight-read a difficult piece that they've never heard before. We will focus on memorizing notes, interval sight-reading, creating rhythm from reading note values, and manipulating them. We will also progressively go through the different scales as they build their understanding of the Circle of 5ths and other music theory.
I believe when students have some say in what they are playing, their enjoyment and practice improves. There will be either a method or classical literature students will be learning, but they will also get to choose one of their multiple performance pieces.
Some students need more emphasis on hands-on-learning. I have 200 activities that are used as-needed. If a student isn't grasping onto a concept, I use these tools for reinforcement and to ease their frustrations.
Students will learn when they feel safe, comfortable, and when they are in a positive environment. Teaching 10 years in Title I public schools, I've learned the necessity of positive reinforcement. I have simple reward systems in place, and while giving constructive feedback, I will always find something positive to say about their performance.
